Septic Tank Odors
Septic Tank Odors
If you are experiencing septic tank odor, that may be a signal to you that you
have a problem with your septic system. What does the odor indicate? Your system
may require you to restore a vent or fix an even more significant problem like
drainage in the area surrounding your septic tank. Issues like this could
indicate spillover for a deficient system which would then require your system
to be pumped out. Septic tank odor is unpleasant and creates an unhealthy
environment.
If your septic tank doesn’t already have them, you or a professional can install
roof top vents on your septic tank. Roof top vents allow for the equalization of
pressure to form in the pipes of your septic system. When this favorable
condition occurs, bathtub drains and toilets stop their incessant annoying
bubbling noises. These noises can occur as waste water runs out to the septic
tank. Septic tank odor will exist if the roof vents become blocked and the water
isn’t able to pass through freely. If this occurs the vents should be cleaned
and a carbon filter can also be placed on the vent to help with the elimination
of septic odors. You can attain filters online or at a home improvement store.
If you have not had your septic tank pumped within the last year or two, you
should do so as soon as possible because the odor may be indicating that you
have a major problem on your hands. What you may smell is waste leaking into
your septic field. If this disastrous condition occurs, your septic tank should
be emptied by a septic professional who will then detect if you have any other
issues that need to be addressed. A crack may have formed in your tank and if
so, you would then have to invest money on a new septic tank. This can be quite
expensive and is why maintaining healthy septic system is so important. If used
on a consistent basis, products containing good bacteria and other additives can
foster a healthy septic tank environment.
Odor emitting from your septic tank is not healthy for your family or for the
environment. Septic waste is toxic and can spread disease. If you are
experiencing bad odors, take immediate action to solve the problem.
