Does Bleach Kill Mold?

Does Bleach kill mold? This is a question that has been asked by customers for many years. Well, the answer is NO it doesn’t. It don’t even disinfect the mold spores let alone kill them. Bleach does not kill mold it will only bleach it into a different color. Bleach will intact slow down the growth of mold to a certain extent. The Clorox Company has stated the bleach in not an effective product for mold remediation. Only approved products should be used to kill mold, control mold and remediate affective mold areas of your home. There are many different products on the market today designed to kill molds of many forms and types. Just to give you a small list of possible household items that mold can affect. We have made up a short list of items that should just give you an idea and to make you aware of the possible hazard in and around your living area.


1) Art work will attract mold.

2) Air conditioners and A/C units.

3) Attic’s are notorious for attracting mold spores.

4) Bamboo looks great but is a great place for mold to hide.

5) Bathroom sinks and under faucets and the cabinets.

6) Boat mold is always a concern and needs to be treated annually.

7) Old book and paper mold.

8) Canvas mold is something like boat mold that needs to be dealt with every year.

9) Carpet and padding mold is something that home owners should always be aware of. These types of mold will hide between the carpet and the floors slowly growing until serious damage has occurred and some form of remediation is required.

10) Caulk Mold.

11) Closet mold and clothing mold. Make sure these areas are dry and safe from moisture and dampness.

12) Crawl spaces are areas where mold can hide and form.

13) Ductwork is a great place for mold to hide, grow and spread throughout the house.

14) Fabric, furniture and upholstery in all forms around the house should be inspected on a regular basis for mold and fungi build up.

15) Patio furniture with fabric covers should be treated on a regular basis with a safe guard mold resistant product. 16) Floor Joist is famous for mold growth.

17) Mold in the garage should always be a concern.

18) Grout mold is a mold condition that requires constant attention.

19) Hot tub and Jacuzzi mold is famous and if the units are used on a regular basis will always have some level of mold. A the areas are just too damp.

20) Shower ceilings mold is one of the worst places to get mold. Even though it is easy to keep clean. Mold will form in a very short period of time spreading to other parts of the house.

21) Shower curtain is another area to be concerned about. Wash and change on a regular basis.

22) Slime mold can occur anywhere there is a sufficient amount of water left over a period of time.

23) Stucco mold is a mold that is typically found in the southern part of the United States or Tropical areas of the country. Mold found in these areas should be dealt with as soon as possible in order to prevent further spread into other parts of the house.

24) Tub Mold, clean your tub often and insure this is an area free of mold.

25) Window blinds and frames are areas to be concerned with, mold will creep up from weather changes and sweating of windows. Ensure these areas are dry and free from moisture.

Bleach just doesn’t kill mold. Bleach is an effective way of killing viruses and bacteria but not mold. Mold is like a plant in that it needs to be killed at the roots. Bleach has a very high concentration of water 99% or more that encourages the growth of mold and fungi. Only an approved EPA mold killing product should be used as an effective means of killing mold.
