Forget using chemical products to treat your bed bug problem; instead use diatomaceous earth to eliminate these horrible blood sucking creatures. Products containing diatomaceous earth are available at your neighborhood feed store or you can go online and find a “green” product that contains DE as one of their primary ingredients. You need to be certain that the diatomaceous earth you are purchasing is food grade. There are products made specifically for swimming pools containing diatomaceous earth that are not safe if consumed by humans or animals, so be certain the DE you are buying or the product you are purchasing contains food grade diatomaceous earth.

What is diatomaceous earth and how will it destroy bed bugs? Diatomaceous earth is a powder that is derived from the fossilized remains of diatoms. DE will not harm us if we touch it but if a bed bug walks through it the results are fatal. DE slashes through the exoskeleton of the bed bugs as they travel through it on there nightly visits to your bed. Diatomaceous earth not only cuts up their exoskeleton but dissolves a bed bug’s waxy top layer. After a bed bug gets a taste of diatomaceous earth, they will dehydrate and succumb to their death.

Bed bugs do not have wings. This means that bed bugs have to crawl up your bed to get to you. Move your bed away from any walls and don’t let your covers touch the floor. Shake diatomaceous earth around each of the legs of your bed frame. It is also advised that you sprinkle it on your mattresses and box springs, particularly in the seams. Diatomaceous earth can also be sprinkled all over your carpets just as you would baking powder. De can be dusted on furniture as well. If you have pets, diatomaceous earth can be rubbed into their fur either in the form of a powder or blended with water and sprayed on. When the solution dries it will do the same job as the powder-like diatomaceous earth. If you have asthma or are just sensitive to dust-like particles you can wear a face mask.

After you let the diatomaceous earth settle and work it’s magic on bed bugs, vacuum it up (along with the dead bed bugs) and properly dispose of the bag. Diatomaceous earth physically kills bed bugs, not chemically. This means that bed bugs can’t develop immunities to it over time. So, bed bugs of New York City, “Beware!”

Diatomaceous earth can also be used outside to keep other troublesome insects from coming into your home. DE kills fleas, lice, ants, and roaches, just to name a few. If you are experiencing a bed bug problem, diatomaceous earth will help you get your life back by taking the lives of bed bugs.
