Septic Tank Factoid

Septic tanks are the standard method for the disposal of human wastewater in many suburban and rural areas. The simplest type of septic system is the standard septic tank systems consisting of two parts: an underground 1000 gallon tank and a set of perforated pipes or laterals that make up the leach bed or drain field where the converted or digested effluent leaches into the ground.

The typical septic tank itself is usually made of fiberglass or concrete, and will usually hold 750 to 2500 gallons. Household wastes flows through the plumbing system of the residence into the tank, where anaerobic bacteria creates a process referred to a digestion where the organic solids are broken down into a simpler chemical compound refer to as effluent. Heavier solids drop to the bottom of the tank as sludge and will take longer to digest, lighter solids float to the surface and form the scum layer floating on the top of the tank. Everything else flows out through a pipe into the perforated pipes in the leach field; The drain field is typically made up of 4 inch lateral plastic pipe. The lateral piping is buried below the frost line and surrounded with 1b and 2b size gravel allowing the drain field proper drainage. The liquid flows out through the perforated later pipe into the gravel area, and from there out into the un-disturbed surrounding soil. Pipe elevations are such that the septic tank remains almost full at all times, which permits bacteria to form and "digest" virtually all the solids that enter the tank. The remaining liquid is dispersed into the soil through the perforated pipes.

The most common failure for septic tank systems is that the soil around the leach field becomes clogged with bio mat. Bio mat is made up from undigested solids that result from a lack of digestion. This is common in today’s septic systems due to the over loading of anti bacteria into the system from household products. When this happens, the water level in the septic tank increases and the house refuse to drain properly causing sewage backs ups, odors and wet drain fields. Unpleasant odors and drains in the home will no longer work properly.

The system will require a bacterial enzyme shock treatment to restore the system to its original state. Bacterial products have been used in homes and septic system waste water treatment plants around the world for decades with great success. A good bacterial based monthly maintenance treatment program will ensure a long lasting septic tank and drain field system. A good maintenance program will ultimately save the home owners thousands in repair of even replacement of septic system at a much greater cost.

The facts are if you maintain a septic system with a good bacterial additive, have the system pumped out about every three or four years depending on the usage of the system. Your septic tank system should give you many long years of maintenance free use.
